The Mole - Technology
"Adds a knowledge layer to content"
The Mole differentiates itself from other content technologies because it uses
internationally patented algorithms to build multi-level relational content
indexes, enabling the user to discover information using their intuitive
process, and to abstract significant content based on their area of interest
to derive meaning.
The internationally patented technologies at the heart of The Mole
business intelligence are based on research conducted
at the University of Otago, New Zealand in the late 1980’s.
Roy Anderson, the inventor, had a vision that with more information in
an electronic form we would need technologies to access the vast amounts of
data and find information of relevance.
Desktop
Edition - The Mole Professional Edition
The Mole is built on
industry standards. It easily installs onto your Microsoft Windows environment
providing you with content analysis tools required for everyday use. The Mole
Professional Edition software is installed on the desktop PC, along with a toolbar icon within
the following information sources: Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
The Mole is running once you have logged on to the desktop
PC. You must be licensed
for The Mole to be activated from the desktop or within the selected information
source.
Industry Standard
The Mole provides
plug-in components through its industry standard integration technologies. Built
on an open, Java-based platform, all interactions with The Mole are
through open-standards including HTTP, XML, J2SE, JDBC. The software fits
seamlessly into PC desktop environments running on Microsoft Windows operating
systems.
Reliable
The Mole reliability is
guided by a broad test strategy, including functional and performance benchmark
tests, extended configuration and integration testing plus early release
programs.
Secure
The Mole installed on the
desktop computer is a server application based on HTTP 1.1. The server
produces HTML output responding to a fixed set of URLs (GET and POST requests).
There are no possibilities of buffer overflow errors (which can allow unauthorized
3rd party access). The buffers are based on java dynamic objects
which prevent illegal out-of-bound access.
Integrated
Microsoft Windows client plug-ins for Microsoft
Word, Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5+ are provided as signed
macros or components. Client plug-ins communicate with The Mole via
an HTTP interface with results being displayed in Microsoft Internet Explorer
5+.
Indexing
The Mole Professional Edition is integrated with Microsoft Index
Server. File types supported for indexing are based on iFilter technologies
and currently include: Office 97/Office 2000/Office XP/Office 2003 (doc, xls, ppt),
rtf, html, txt, text based files, wpd (word perfect versions 8 & 9), pdf, zip (requires a 3rd party license).
Minimum Software Requirements
Desktop: Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional, Microsoft Windows XP.
Office Technology Plug-ins: Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5.0+, Microsoft Word 97+, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0+.
Enterprise
Edition - The Mole Enterprise Edition
The Mole Enterprise Edition is built on
industry standards. It fits seamlessly into your environment providing a set
of business intelligence services including, Content Analyzer, Content Discoverer, Content
Profiler & Key Terms Manager. Your enterprise can integrate The Mole
into your IT infrastructure and extend the core content services to meet your
business needs. Access to The Mole is easy via an industry
standard browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Industry Standard
The Mole Enterprise Edition middle-tier
service provides enterprise interoperability and scalability through its
industry standard integration technologies. Built on an open, Java-based
platform, all interactions with The Mole are through open-standards
including HTTP, XML, J2SE, JDBC. The platform fits seamlessly into existing
enterprise architectures running on Solaris or Windows operating systems.
Reliable
The Mole Enterprise Edition reliability is
guided by a broad test strategy, including functional and performance benchmark
tests, extended configuration and integration testing plus early release
programs.
Secure
The Mole Enterprise Edition is a server
based on HTTP 1.1. The server produces HTML or XML output responding to a
fixed set of URLs (GET and POST requests). There are no possibilities of buffer
overflow errors (which can allow unauthorized 3rd party access). The buffers are
based on java dynamic objects which prevent illegal out-of-bound access.
Attempting to use The Mole to execute 3rd party applications is not
possible (e.g. exe, scripts, asp, jsp or HTTP based viruses), nor will it permit
access to file systems. None of the known vulnerabilities that apply to
commercially available HTTP protocol based web servers apply to The Mole.
Integrated
The figure above shows how The Mole can be deployed within the organization's
architecture. Specific
integration capabilities of The Mole include integration with desktop
applications, enterprise business applications, enterprise infrastructure
technologies, and other sources of electronic information. By utilizing
HTTP and XML standards it is possible to integrate The Mole
with applications across operating system platforms and extranet
applications. A set of APIs support the integration of The Mole's
content intelligence services with other applications.
A Microsoft windows dll custom component is
also available for Microsoft C++ or Microsoft Visual Basic. The
Mole host server is identified through Windows registry entries (host
name, IP address and Port) allowing reconfiguration without the need to
change software code. A developers guide provides software engineers
with step by step instructions for adding the custom component and using
HTTP and XML to communicate with The Mole server.
Microsoft Windows client plug-ins for
Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader 5+ are provided as signed macros
or components. Client plug-ins communicate with The Mole via an
HTTP interface with results being displayed in Microsoft Internet Explorer
5+.
Integration with Microsoft Windows NT file system (NTFS) allows The Mole to integrate with files stored across the
organization. By tapping into core Microsoft technologies The Mole
is able to provide access to content for discovery, analysis, profiling and
the creation of metadata.
Data storage integration with industry standard technologies such as Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and NTFS provide a
dependable platform to manage content related to The Mole's core
content and services.
